Our lovely self catering orchard studio is ideal for tranquil and cosy breaks or retreats in Cornwall and is available to book any time throughout the year. It includes a shower and hand-crafted kitchen with a huge brass bed, a big comfy sofa, a great woodburner and all dining facilities. The walls are covered with lime-plaster and painted with lime-wash in warm earthy honeyed golds, terracotta and soft blue while its roof is made of rubber slates from recycled car tyres.
The private deck overlooks the apple orchard, the woods below and the traditional Cornish field patterns of Cotna Valley on the other side. There are outdoor compost loos, tree-bog style, and our recently installed wee-room complete with haybale – very eco-friendly! There are indoor facilities for night-time if you don’t want to venture outdoors!
The studio is part of an L-shaped building, and is built of straw-bales. The large part of the L is a communal space for events such as yoga and wild-food forage cook & dine lessons and demonstrations, while the small part of the L is peaceful and atmospheric accommodation suitable for two and up to three people.
The thick insulation of the straw bales in this eco friendly barn conversion keeps the barn cool in summer and the heat from the wood-burner keeps it toasty warm in the winter. The studio is spacious and the décor is tastefully stylish in a rustic, curvy kind of way!
Where to start? We’ve enjoyed ourselves so much betting to know this BEAUTIFUL land/sea-scape around you have, that it’s beginning to feel like ‘home’ – especially after one of your brilliant recommended walks – great to then get snug in this lovely straw bale house. Such a good job is being done here – having been ‘in the business’ we know there’s a lot of graft as well as craft and this smallholding of yours is SUCH a good example of just how it should be. THANK YOU!

We’re back for the second year running and have had yet another wonderfully relaxing stay at this peaceful haven. We’ve really enjoyed soaking up the sun on the deck and snuggling up by the log burner in the chilly evenings. We’ve also loved walking down the beautiful valley to Portmellon and Mevagissey and having a quiet pint at the Barley Sheaf pub. Looking forward to seeing you next time!

Fabulous! So relaxing and quiet—lovely people, cats and dogs. We will miss your cat Kiwi who has become our constant breakfast companion. Sitting out on the deck or lying in the shade of the trees and watching the birds was just great. Thanks for the walks Dave—we really enjoyed the one we did and the description was spot on. It’s been a really lovely time.

The doctor told me I was stressed. He did his best but when pressed, prescribed me space away from the ‘rat race’ and going at a slower pace. And so I stayed in this barn and I don’t wanna spin a yarn. But with freedom to ‘just be’ and time for only me I had a chance to unwind. Dave and Sara were so kind. So I just wanna say before the end of my stay… this is such a wonderful place and now I have a happy face! With thanks and good wishes.

The barn was sunny and inspirational—the perfect place to revitalize ourselves. We walked, read and were enticed by the landscape to explore. The fruit, vegetables, salads and of course all the wonderful preserves were the icing on the cake—so delicious and delightful. We wish you all the very best for future happiness and success here at Cotna.

Thank you so much for our lovely relaxing stay at the strawbale barn! We will always remember our time here and are already sad to leave! We really enjoyed the long walks along the coastline, relaxing in the orchard and trying out your delicious organic eggs, bread, salad and beetroot!
