Walk 5 Mevagissey Through the Fields
above: Mevagissey Harbour
Duration / Distance: 1 hour / 2 miles
Terrain: Steep hill at Cotna Eco Retreat, stiles, muddy when wet at Galowras Mill.
Overview: Wide open views across the Portmellon valley to the sea, and down to Mevagissey harbour (pubs, restaurants, fish).
Leave Cotna Eco Retreat through entrance way then immediately right up along the hedge of the oval field. Over the stile on the right, cross 2 horse fields on the path, then over the 3rd stile into the Woodland Trust’s Sanctuary Wood. Turn left along the top, then first right down to the bottom of the hill, rather than the direct downhill near vertical slippery footpath.
Turn right at bottom through gate, follow path over stream, across wilding field, over stile into West Bodrugan Wood nature reserve. Keep to the level path until the gate onto the lane. Turn left down to Galowras Mill, then turn right to follow the signed public footpath through a gate and stream, up to fields.
Follow the field track along the valley, then up to the left and into Penwarne Farm. Go through the farm buildings and up the lane to the road; turn left uphill to the next bend then take the footpath on the left past a couple of houses, through a gate into a field then turn right alongside the hedge, follow the footpath to a residential road: here turn right then left down an alley to the top of Polkirt Hill. Mevagissey is down to the left, with great views down to the harbour. Try the Kings Arms for great old pub and quality food, or She Sells café on the harbourside for Breton galettes and crepes.
